1. Probiotics that actually arrive.
Putting bacteria back is the obvious answer. The problem is survival. Most probiotic strains are fragile, and a cat's stomach is strongly acidic. Spore-forming Bacillus strains are different: the spore coat carries them through the stomach intact, and they become active in the gut, where they're needed.
2. Persistence, past the point where it usually relapses.
This is the lever nobody names, so I'll name it, and it's where that firm fortnight comes in.
Metronidazole is an antibiotic. It doesn't distinguish between the bacteria causing trouble and the ones forming the stool. In a study of healthy dogs given metronidazole, microbiome richness and key bacterial groups dropped and had not fully recovered four weeks after the last dose; the authors concluded the effect lasts a minimum of four weeks. In almost half of those dogs, the disruption was still there at the four-week mark. That work was in dogs, but the principle is the one I watched play out in cats for years.
So the two firm weeks after the tablets? That's the stool lying to you. The flare is suppressed, and underneath it the population is at its lowest. Right on schedule, around week three, it shows.
Rebuilding isn't a five-day job. It's a daily job that has to run straight through the window where she'd normally relapse.
3. The reserve: taurine.
If loose stools draw it down, the rebuild should top it up. Not as a gut treatment. The probiotics do the gut work. The taurine is there for what the last year has cost her.
So the real question isn't "should I try a probiotic?" It's:
Can I rebuild the population, keep going past the two-week mark, and top up what she's lost, without another food change and three more products?
